Pooling power and using it just at the right moment. This is the principle of the cylinder-on-demand; because performance does not necessarily mean a high level of consumption. With the innovative cylinder-on-demand technology, the power in all the cylinders is pooled and is only used when it is really needed.

Powerful engines are often mainly only operated in the lower/medium partial throttle range which has a negative effect on efficiency (and therefore on consumption). Cylinder-on-demand reduces fuel consumption by deactivating cylinders under partial throttle.

Advantages at a glance:

• The deactivation of cylinders not required when the engine is being operated under partial throttle is performed with the aid of the familiar and successful Audi valvelift system on the intake and exhaust sides. In this case, the valves concerned remain closed.
• This results in significant improvements in MVEG and in customer’s fuel consumption.
